Yoga Pose and Habit of the Month: Tree Pose (Vrksasana) & Mindful Breathing

Updated: Sep 8

September is a great time to cultivate balance and stability as we transition from summer to fall. Tree Pose, or Vrksasana, is ideal for this period. This pose strengthens your legs, improves balance, and enhances focus. To practice Tree Pose:

  1. Start by standing tall with your feet together and arms at your sides.

  2. Shift your weight onto one foot, and place the sole of your other foot on the inner thigh or calf of the standing leg (avoid the knee).

  3. Bring your hands to your heart center in a prayer position, or extend them overhead for an added challenge.

  4. Hold the pose for 30 seconds to a minute, then switch sides.

Focus on a fixed point ahead to help maintain balance and breathe deeply to ground yourself.

Habit of the Month: Mindful Breathing

September is a perfect time to deepen your mindfulness practice with mindful breathing. This simple habit can be a powerful tool for stress reduction and mental clarity. To practice mindful breathing:

  1. Find a quiet place and sit comfortably with your back straight.

  2. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths, inhaling through your nose and exhaling through your mouth.

  3. Shift to breathing naturally through your nose. Focus on the sensation of the breath entering and leaving your nostrils.

  4. Observe any thoughts or distractions that arise, and gently bring your focus back to your breath.

  5. Practice this for 5-10 minutes daily.

Incorporating mindful breathing into your daily routine can help you stay grounded and present, especially during busy or stressful times.

By integrating Tree Pose and mindful breathing into your September routine, you can enhance both your physical balance and mental clarity as you embrace the changes of the season.
